Growing solitary and scattered on the ground in mixed Oak-Hickory woods
Pileus to 5.5 cm, orange to peach-orange, dry, very finely powdery. Margin inrolled at first, then flat and finally vase-shaped with a central depression. Gills close, attached to sub-decurrent, yellow at first but creamy yellowish-white in age. Stipe to 5cm long, color and texture like cap or slightly lighter, equal, tapering only at extreme end of base, brittle. Copious white latexy milk produced when any part of the pileus, gills, or stipe is even slightly damaged. The milk unchanging but staining the gills brown after a while. Odor mild and pleasant in young specimens, fishy and unpleasant in age. Taste mild. Spore print white. Microscopic characteristics: Spores broadly ellipsoid, ~ 9 - 7 µm, with many conspicuous amyloid warts and ridges.
