Scattered on the ground on the side of a trail in mixed hardwood/conifer woods.
On mossy ground and needle duff.
Cap to 3 cm broad, convex at first but soon becoming broadly umbonate (bell-shaped), dry, off white with reddish-brown scales. Scales small, arranged mostly concentrically, with few scales at the margin and more toward the center of the cap, with the center of the cap having a circular darker reddish-brown covering. Gills free, close, off-white or creamy white. Veil present as a fragile, superior, membranous whitish ring that is not present on all of the specimens. Stipe to 5 cm long, 1-4 mm thick, more or less equal, pinkish-buff in age, off-white when young. Flesh in pileus off-white. Flesh in stipe reddish-buff. Odor unique but difficult to describe. Slightly sweet but unpleasant, with metallic overtones. KOH on cap surface negative. Spore print white. Microscopic characteristics: Cheilocystidia present. Spores weakly dextrinoid, smooth, distinctively shaped like candy corn (or bullet shaped/ pie wedge shape). Spores 3-5 x 4-7ยต
