Gregarious and clustered on a hardwood stick that was largely buried in the soil, covered by duff. Mixed woods, though mostly deciduous (Oak-Hickory-Maple) with few confiers in the area
Stalked cup Cups to 1 cm in diameter, pinkish to salmon colored. At first inrolled and shaped almost like a young poppy, then expanding from a small central opening. Top edge of cup distinctly covered with long, spiny, whitish hairs. Interior of cup smooth. Stalk up to 3 cm long, thin, equal of thicker below. Grayish or off white, becoming pinkish to peach colored above (near the underside of the cup). Distinctly hairy. Flesh thin, soft, pliable. Copious bright orange mycelial threads around the bases of some of the cups, as well as along the outside of the stick, including areas of the stick with no fruiting bodies. Odor not distinctive.
When I first disturbed the stick, there was a large spore discharge that sent a visible cloud of spores up to 5 cm up from one of the cups. This was accompanied by a clearly audible sound -a quick ‘hiss’or ‘pfft’ sound - as the spores discharged.
