On and near old decaying pine stumps
PILEUS 3.5-17 cm broad, convex to plano-convex, dry, powdery to tomentose, often breaking up into patches, margin incurved and with a small sterile lip, colored 3.75Y 8/14 (NRE but near Lemon Chrome), with 10R 2/4 (near Bay) areas where leaves touch; CONTEXT thick, medium soft, 10-25 (35) mm, odor fruity, taste mild to slightly bitter, cuticle up to 2 mm thick, colored "Bright Yellow" very young, becoming 5Y 8.5/4 (Cream Color) older, "bluing" mostly above tubes, becoming "reddish" with age; TUBES decurrent with lines on apex of stipe, 6-7 (14) mm long, 1-2/ mm, mouths when young colored 10R 2/6 (near Mahogany Red), most remain "reddish" but some fading to become 2.5Y 5/6 (Orange Citrine) with tubes in side view, bruising "bluish" mostly in side view; STIPE 5-8 cm long, 8-20 (35) mm broad, more or less equal, apex flared, dry, apex with a reticulum that merges into tubes, glabrous below, solid, apex colored 10R 2/6 (near Mahogany Red), middle 2.5YR 4/6 (near Kaiser Brown), with 2.5YR 2/4 (Chestnut) stains in age, bright 7.5Y 8/10-11 (Lemon Yellow) mycelium at base; SPORES "pale olivaeous" (KOH), elliptical, smooth, thick-walled, 8-9 x 3-3.8 um; CYSTIDIA pleurocystidia hyaline with "pale yellowish brown" content (KOH), ventricose-rostrate, 50-62 x 2.5-11 um. CUTICLE interwoven, brittle?, containing a yellow pigment easily dissolving out (alcohol, water, KOH), 3um broad, pileal context interwoven, hyaline, up to 18 um broad, some appearing cellular? COMMENTS: Although considered rare in the literature, this striking yellow colored bolete can be common at times in east Texas. Reported on pine stumps we often find it on the ground a short distance from the stump.
