old-growth (200 yr.) red pine forest, with red pine, white pine, balsam fir, paper birch
Old Growth Forest Project, Transect 1, in circle at 60 m, and near circles at 65, 70 m. MICROSCOPIC ANALYSIS: Basidiospores from spore print (x1250, 5% KOH) ovate, finely verrucose with small warts, ca, 0.25 µm wide, covering entire spore, small hilar appendix, profile: 9.9-11.9 x 7.0-8.0 (-8.5) µm (n=20), av. 10.8 x 7.5 µm, Q (1.34-) 1.36-1.49 (-1.59), Q av 1.44. Average spore width is wider than reported by Niskanen, I.K., et al., Mycologia 103: 1080-1101, 2011, but not by much, and the Q av. is smaller. The spores for the collection indicate C. armillatus, Joe Ammirati, Aug. 8, 2022.
