You made a good mistake here because the lichen has not produced soredia yet, something that happens infrequently but regularly with H. physodes. Lacking soredia, it would key to H. metaphysodes; and you are correct, that would be seriously out of range.

Best I can do in Brodo is H. metaphysodes, which would be out of range. No soredia, slightly concave thallus, white medullary ceiling. Growing on manzanita.
