The false chanterelle (Hygrophoropsis aurantiaca) is a basidiomycete fungus which resembles the commonly collected and eaten Cantharellus cibarius. It can be distinguished by its bright orange colour and convex cap. Unlike Cantharellus cibarius, it can grow on decaying wood or on the ground. It also has true gills, unlike chanterelles, which are thin, tightly spaced, and forked.
