Uncommon - solitary. Noted occasionally on open red clay under dense canopy of rawiri (Kunzea linearis), kahikatoa (Leptospermum scoparium s.l.) and tanekaha (Phyllocladus trichomanoides). Sites flood frequently washing away leaf litter. Fruiting body greyish brown, coriaceous, not slimy or mucilaginous finely pubescent; pores pale cream; stipe rather broad, slightly tapering toward pileus, covering in fine reddish-brown caducous tomentum / scales, upper portion very faintly cream-coloured.
