'Fruitbody up to 6cm H., 1-3 mm thick, concolorous stalk, cylindric to long-conic, usually unbranched, brown to black, very though; interior white, soft; surface smooth or roughened by embedded perithecia. Spores elliptic-inequilateral to somewhat crescent shape, with a spiraling germ slit, smooth, brown. Solitary or in groups on the fallen fruits of sweetgum; fall and early winter. Southeastern USA.'
