This is one of our more unusual grisette species. It has a unique, three-layered volva, which breaks into a thick layer of warts on the cap, and an indistinct volval cup at the base. This species also reddens with age, and shows yellowing in all parts. It is typically much more robust that other CA grisettes. The heavy white flocculence on the upper stipe changed to gray overnight. It is purportedly edible, but I have never eaten it.
