Found a small group of these. ID'd using Arora which led to L. foetidum, which Index Fungorum says is now L. nigrescens. These were fruiting among live oak, madrone, bay, deciduous oak. And they did smell kind of yucky. I removed the two shots Debbie refers to (before I saw her question). They were close-ups of the surface of the puffball. You can actually see this better by clicking on the image then clicking again. Apparently, the shots I'd prepared (from these two shots) were smaller than MushOb expects, so they were enlarged making them kind of blurry.
