The appearance at different ages fits Lincoff's description of this species, and the color plate, to a T. Found in Zone 45; there were two large fruitings, one looking like a partial fairy ring and the other featured here. They were maybe 30m apart and covering a few square meters each. Given the vase-shaped elders and general look, I expected latex when I cracked one open, but got nothing, even from a quite young specimen, indicating that it was one of the more lactarioid __Russula__s. Then I was flipping through Lincoff looking for something else and saw a color plate that looked eerily like the third photo of this observation. Finally, a Russula that isn't that hard to identify!
