In the populations that occur on the grounds of the NYBG, the sclerotia are typically deeply buried in wood chip mulched flower beds. The stipes taper below the mulch-soil interface and are radicating to the sclerotia. The upright basidiomes have faded at the pileus margin. Sclerotia are seen in the lower right and lower left of the images. The second image has a sclerotium cut open. Herbarium specimen in NY (RE Halling #9239)
