Identification: There are two species of Cladonia with tall, slender, yellowish podetia, farinose soredia, and red pycnidia to consider (characterizations from Brodo, 2001): Cladonia deformis (podetia straighter, more regular; medulla UV-) Cladonia sulphurina (podetia more lumpy and irregular, often split; UV+ bright bluish white) In New England, Cladonia deformis is fairly common and Cladonia sulphurina is uncommon (Hinds and Hinds, 2007). It is even possible that both species were represented at this locality or even in these photos, but lacking UV evidence, I will associate this observation with MO observation 21440 and call it Cladonia deformis.
