Not an expert at this, I defer to the insight of others. Here's what I know: these "boletus orovilluses" (old name) were found in sandy soil mixed with a roughly two-inch thick top layer of wood chips. As the trees growing nearby were a mix of Monterey Pines and Cypress, and because there were stumps of Monterey Pines nearby, I suspect these mushrooms were saprophytically attached to Monterey Pine decay. The flesh of both cap and stipe bruised blue... lightly, a color that soon faded. The pores bruised, in my opinion, more green than blue. The mycelia were yellow/orange. The pores were yellow in young specimens, more red, or tinged with red, in older specimen. The spore print, such as it was, was olive. I have dried some of these, so if anyone would like to do further study, be my guest.
