These were found in the Big Sandy Creek Unit. Specimens were up to about 3 cm wide and 2.2 cm high. As the photo shows, the spores are purplish. The spores were ~ 5-6 microns, and apparently with some high spines and varying lengths of a hyaline pedicel. They don't seem to be Calvatia cyathiformis, which is the only purple spored mushroom that I can see in my references? Edit 7/17/12; Lycoperdon atropurpureum does seem to fit fairly well. However, it appears to be a European species without much recognition in NA. Edit 7/19/12; Fred Stevens suggested Lycoperdon rimulatum as a possibility. After reading the Coker and Couch description as well as the paper by Bates, Roberson and Desjardin (Arizona gasteroid fungi I: Lycoperdaceae), it does look very reasonable. It has been reported in the Gulf Coast and Texas according to the references.
