On mossy ground in mixed woods--birch within 10 feet. Cap up to 6.5 cm., convex, brown to gray brown, smooth, dry. White pores, depressed at stem, bruising yellow brown. Tubes 1 cm., pallid. Stem whitish with black scabers, 10 cm. x 12 mm. Flesh of cap and stem white turning slightly reddish except for bluing at base of stem inside and out. Mild odor and taste. Brown spore deposit.
