Smith & Hesler list perplexus at 1-3cm. The examples shown here follow closely Smith & Hesler description with the exception that these perplexus examples consistently show sizes bigger than the original description by Smith & Hesler. Commonly these are over 5cm. The habitat for these shown here is also different. Whereas Smith & Hesler suggest perplexus grows under "aspen and beech on thin sandy soil", these are under deep shade of mixed conifer forest. Western Red Cedar, Doug Fir, Alder and Maple.
