Growing scattered in leaf litter in a mixed hardwood/pine woods; predominantly hardwoods. Cap. Approximately 6 inches diameter; red-brown and almost flat when mature; turning vase-shaped as they aged with cream/tan ‘furry’ appearance. Gills. Cream, close, attached; many gills fork near the margin. Milk released when cut. Gills discoloring brown when damaged. Stipe. Approximately 2.5 inches long, 1 inch diameter at the apex; ‘purplish;’ tapering from apex to base; showing some evidence of hollowing. No distinctive odor. Spore print. White. Spores. Globose-subglobose; ornamented with ridges; 6-10µ.
