Growing in a grassy clearing on a ridge-top near Quercus sect. Lobatae, Carya sp., Fagus grandifolia, Prunus serotina and Acer nigrum. Growing scattered and in clusters of up to 3 fruiting bodies joined at the base. Cap smooth and mottled with orange shades. Stem with whitish reticulation. Young pores white and stuffed, becoming yellow in age. Pores not bruising. Cap context white and with some reddish stains. Taste mild. Some fruiting bodies chewed and pulled out of the ground by rodents. NH4OH purple on cap, neutral to slightly purple on stem and purple to purplish brown on pores. 5% KOH red on cap and light brown on stem and pores. 10% FeSO4 neutral on cap and stem, neutral to grayish on pores.
