This specimen was collected by a student of Santa Fe Prep back in February and given to Dr. Roger S. Peterson for identification/sakekeeping. Dr. Peterson is a retired botanist and mycologist, and a former professor at St. John's College in Santa Fe, New Mexico. He manages Santa Fe's only herbarium located at (but not technically part of) the Randall Davey Audubon Center. I contacted him during a recent trip to New Mexico, where he invited me to his home. He had described this then unidentified agaric over the phone, and during our meeting, we set to work elucidating its rightful name.
