Large, bulbous fungi growing in a cluster of two. Each has a spongy (slimy) gray/brown/green mass surrounded by a blush/cream/brown crust-like peridium (looks sort of like cracked sourdough bread). One appears to be splitting open to form "arms," typical of earth stars. Each one of these is larger than my fist. They were found at the top of ridge near pine/mixed hardwood forest in Northeast Alabama (Cherokee County). They were growing in a compost pile (with a lot of campfire ash), pine needles, etc. Any help with an ID is much appreciated!
