A NJMA foray collection. At least two collections picked by the foray participants in mixed woods of hemlock, white pine, birch, oak, maple, and other hardwoods. While taking the uploaded images, I didn't notice a single fruiting body of T. felleus hiding among the Retiboletus sporocarps -- see the captions under the pix. This collection reminds me of the conifer-associated taxon I've been finding for years in the NJ Pine Barrens [e.g., obs 74396, obs 174953 (long spores), obs 255496, obs 286423, and obs 289404 that somewhat resembles the hardwood-loving R. griseus (e.g., obs 329049_), and has been dubbed "_R. fuscus sensu Kuo" on MO. M. Kuo describes it on his website: https://www.mushroomexpert.com/retiboletus_fuscus.html. The marco-morphological differences between the two taxa can be readily appreciated. The exposed stipe flesh of this collection was chrome yellow mixed in with dark burgundy-red areas. The flesh of the caps and upper stipes didn't stain at all or turned light pinkish-brown.
