North Bay NAP in area of mature western red cedar, spruce and hemlock. Extremely viscid - you can actually see in in bottom photo if you look close. On moss (deep moss) covered hump - near sea level - that might have been a very old rotten stump? Even though Mushrooms of the Redwood Coast suggest the odor is "indistinct" - this G. laeta had an especially strong burnt rubber smell to it. VERY distinct! Typical for this area - although this one had a particularly strong smell to it. There may be some difference between those of the PNW and the California species of this name as Redwood Coast suggest the color is also very variable and "competes" with G. psittacinus for the most variable colored mushroom. The color in the PNW that I have seen is very similar and very drab.
