scant, white latex and deep red cap; slowly becomes hot; white spores EDIT: upon re-checking, the latex does turn yellowish, but very slowly Similar species: L. luculentus- generally not as dark or deep red, spores darker L. substriatus- very similar but with a distinctly translucent-striate margin and cap not as uniformly colored L. subflammeus- also very similar, but latex unchanging and growing with pine, as opposed to pseudotsuga, descriptions of taste vary L. subviscidus- very red viscid cap, white spores, fits description of taste and latex. Can occur with Douglas-fir.
