Pileus 7-52 mm in diameter, umbilicate to infundibuliform, radially fibrillose, dry, fuscous (7-9174) to tan (6E6); margin enrolled when young; smooth to crenulate or ragged in mature basidiocarp. Context leathery, cream (4A2), up to 2 mm wide; odor not distinctive. Hymenophore cantharelloid, decurrent, with rudimentary lamellum folds; lamellae not more than 1 mm deep, 1-2 times forked, grayish-orange (5B3), sub-distant. Stipe terete to flattened toward the apex, sometimes radicate, 13-66 mm x 2-5 mm, leathery, brown, sub-tomentose to smooth; tomentum whitish to pale brown. Basal mycelium white, with numerous white mycelial strands.
Spores 7.5-9.8 (-10.6) x (3.5-) 3.9-5.1 µm [E=(1.62-) 1.67-2.30 (-2.40); Em 1.97; Lm=8.76; Wm 4.46], sub-cylindric to cylindric, hyaline in KOH, smooth, thin-walled, inamyloid, 1several guttate (Fig. 2); apiculus short. Basidia claviform, 34-62 µm x 6.4-11.2 µm, hyaline, 4-sterigmate, rarely 2-sterigmate, clamped; sterigmata up to 7.5 µm. Metuloids abundant, fusiform, 59-127 µm x 9.5-26.5 µm, thick-walled, 2.4-4.8 µm, dextrinoid, encrusted at the apex over 1/4 to 1/3 (Fig. 3); stipe metuloids scarce, up to 108 µm x 20 µm, arising from a cylindrical base longitudinally oriented (parallel to the stipe trama), up to 85 µm x 5.0 µm.
Cuticle 10-23 µm, of repent hyaline hyphae, 0.8-1.6 µm broad; surface hyphae yellowish to brown, (2.4-) 4.8-5.6 (-8.0) µm broad; some hyphae with encrusted pigments, clamped, (2.4-) 3.2-4.0 (-7.2) µm broad; pileocystidia scarce, capitate, ventricose-rostrate or fusiformrostrate (Fig. 4), clamped, hyaline, up to 154 µm x 24 µm; caulocystidia similar to pileocystidia, thin-walled, up to 148 µm x 16 µm, sometimes encrusted at the apex, abundant on the stipe apex. Hyphal system dimitic. Pileus hyphae radially arranged; generative hyphae hyaline, clamped, (1.6-) 2.4-8.0 (-12.0) µm broad, uninflated; skeletal hyphae loosely interwoven with generative hyphae, unseptate, yellowish, 1.6-4.8 µm; wall of the skeletal hyphae 0.8-1.6 µm thick. Lamellar generative hyphae tightly interwoven, hyaline, clamped, 3.2-4.8 (-6.4) µm; skeletal hyphae interwoven with generative hyphae, sinuous, (1.6-) 2.4-4.0 µm, with yellowish walls, 0.8-1.6 µm thick. Stipe hyphae longitudinally arranged;, generative hyphae hyaline, clamped, (1.6-) 2.4-6.4 µm broad; skeletal hyphae slightly interwoven with generative hyphae, (2.4-) 3.2-4.8 µm broad, with yellowish walls, 0.8-1.6 µm thick; surface hyphae erect to sub-erect, loosely arranged. Mycelia( strands dimitic; generative hyphae (1.6-) 2.4 (-9.6) µm; skeletal hyphae (1.6-) 2.4-3.2 µm.
Habit, habitat and phenology in Mexico: Solitary or gregarious on charcoal or burnt soils, in Quercus, Quercus-Pinus or montane cloud forests, 1800-2800 m, July to October.
