A small, nearly pure stand of Quercus garryana with the shrubby undergrowth removed, likely due to its use as a farm or pasture land in earlier times. During the summer before we collected there, a light fire had gone over the area without damaging the trees; the grass had already recovered by November. This stand appears to be on an old river terrace with basic soil that originated from serpentine and other parent materials in the Middle Fork drainage of the Smith River.
