In grass under edges of spruce or hemlock, sheep pasture. From type locality.
Zones disappear in drying. Index Fungorum synonymizes this species with Lactarius aspideus (Fr.) Fr., Epicr. syst. mycol. (Upsaliae): 336 (1838), but Hesler & Smith recognize L. aspideeoides Burl. as a distinct species.
