Growing scattered in sandy soil and moss on the side of a trail in mixed-woods.
On ground
Fruiting bodies to 5 cm tall, up to 7 cm wide. Cap dingy to dark grey, mostly flat with a central knob that is slightly darker. Cap dry, smooth. Gills dingy-white, close, broadly attached to the stem (notched in one specimen). Stem short (2-3 cm), stiff, grayish-white, equal with a slightly enlarged base. Odor mild. Spore print white. Spore print included with collection. Microscopic characteristics: Spores elliptical, amyloid, warted. Pleurocystidia present.
Collection was in somewhat sandy soil, and there were bits of sand that were found on both the pileus and on the stipe/gills
