PILEUS 5.5-10 cm broad, convex becoming broadly convex, slight depression at disk of some, velvety, margin inrolled, young 7.5 YR 2/2 (No Ridgway Equivalent) becoming 7.5YR 3/5 (near Argus brown) to 7.5YR 5/4 (Prout's brown); CONTEXT 12-15mm thick, odor mild, taste bitter, white, often 5YR 5.5/4 (near fawn color) above tubes in some; TUBES slightly depressed to depressed in age, 5-11mm long, 1-2/mm, separated from context by a hyaline line, 'white' soon 5YR 6/4 (NRE); STIPE 5-8.5cm long, 9-17(26) mm broad, at first equal but tapering downwards with age, surface appearing marbled, glabrous, with fine pruinea in age, apex often reticulated, solid becoming cavernous, at first 10P 6/2 ( purplish ) to 10P 6/4 ( purplish ), becoming concolorous cap to 7.5YR 6/4-7/4 (Avellaneous); SPORES PRINT 7.5YR 6/4 (Avellaneous); SPORES hyaline in KOH, subfusiforM, 10-12 x 3.5-4 µm; CHEILOCYSTIDIA common, with granular contents?, ventricose-rostrate, 25-35 x 3-8µm; pleurocystidia scattered, with granular contents, similar to cheilocystidia, but larger, 35-60 x 7-11µm; TUBE TRAMA bilateral, hyaline, narrow hyphae, some lactifers found; CUTICLE a trichoderm, somewhat ascending but tangled, with dark "brownish· contents which form small balls, up to 6µm broad; CHEMICAL TESTS: 5%KOH-cuticle 2.5Y 6/6 (Honey Yellow), more 'reddish brown' on young cap, context little yellowing?, tubes slightly darker; conc. ammonia little reaction all parts.
