Nice! You're right, it's a lichen, and since your photo shows the black lower surface and is good enough to show the rhizines (the velvety stuff on the black side), that's about all you need to get to the species.

Notes:
large hand-sized lichen? black underside brown on side away from rock. Looks like it's 'peeling' off the rocks.
