Grayish white mushroom with slightly shaggy stem and suede-like cap. The stem has brownish lines running up its length, and is thicker at the bottom than at the top. The surprise comes when one looks at the gills. They are brilliant purple, though they fade with age and usually have a white coating of spores on mature specimens. Spore print white.
