For my own reference, this is on p. 298 of Brodo. He calls attention to a similar genus, Baeomyces, which has brown apothecia, and another congener, D. absoluta, a rare eastern species that has unstalked apothecia and a smooth thallus. Cladonia caespiticia (Brodo p. 242) has similar elevated apothecia but has a squamulose thallus.
