Uncommon. Occasional solitary specimens noted in damp leaf duff under dense canopy of rawiri (Kunzea linearis), ponga (Cyathea dealbata 'Te Paki race'), mamangi (Coprosma arborea) and puriri (Vitex lucens). Fruiting bodies up to 40 mm tall; stalk robust, smooth, 10-12 mm diameter, pinkish-white, becoming broader toward cap somewhat fibrous internally; cap up to 80 mm diameter, upper surface slightly to strongly dish-shaped, pale to dark pink-brown with darker pinkish brown scales, smooth, not slimy or sticky, central depression more strongly pigmented than rest of cap; underside white, gills white.
