Seen once. Colonial - emerging from leaf litter and clay aside track. Immediate forest dominated by kahikatoa (Leptospermum scoparium agg.), rawirinui (Kunzea robusta), toru (Toronia toru), horoeka (Pseudopanax crassifolius) houpara (P. lessonii), P. crassifolius x P. lessonii, Veronica macrocarpa var. macrocarpa and cyperaceous plants in understorey / ground cover. A large colonial mushroom, mature specimens 150-180 mm diameter, upper surface mostly smooth (in places bearing small lumpy scales - so imparting a slight rugose texture), somewhat 'corky', orange to pale orange; undersides with orange-brown to brown gills. Stalk stout, squat, up to 20 mm diameter, smooth.
