@chrisg -- This is NOT the regular giant puffball -- the NYMS people were adamant about that, and the one that was on the list they sent us is this species. When they cut it in half it was dark and firm on the inside, with a very leathery outer coat. The NY Mycological Society folks said this species is "common on the West Coast and the Rockies, but said to be occasional in the East". They said that they had never seen it before!
