Common on spring onions (Allium cepa) and leeks (Allium ampeloprasum) in garden. Voucher: P.J. de Lange 14337 & T.J.P. de Lange, UNITEC 10547 (Duplicate: PDD). Of these collections Dr Eric McKenzie observed to me by email (8 November 2019): 'Your specimen is now the earliest record of the genuine Puccina allii in New Zealand, although there are many earlier records under this name. The real P. allii is what I first saw from Lincoln, collected on leak and A. cepa var. aggregatum in March of this year. In the past, Allium rust in New Zealand has been referred to as both P. allii and P. porri. The first definite record of a second rust was not made until March 2019 when P. allii was found in both Lincoln and Pukekohe. The infection was thought to be more severe than usually seen when plants are infected by P. porri (Mark Braithwaite, pers. comm.) and it was also the first time a rust had been recorded on leek in New Zealand. Teliospores of P. allii are longer than those of P. porri (mean 53.4 ? 20.8 ?m vs. 41.3 ? 20.6 ?m), and the apical wall in the teliospores of P. allii may be thickened up to 8 ?m, while in P. porri the apical wall is only 2?3.5 ?m thick'.
