U.S.A., California, Del Norte, Gasquet Flat, N. side of Middle Fk. of Smith R., Hwy 199.
A small, nearly pure stand of Quercus garryana w/the shrubby undergrowth removed, likely due to its use as a farm or pasture land in earlier times. During the simmer before we collected there, a light fire had gone over the area w/o damaging the trees; the grass had already recovered by November. This stand appears to be on an old river terrace with basic soil that originated from serpentine and other parent materials in the Middle Fork drainage of the Smith River.
