C. albipes var. crispa is distinguished from variety albipes by the "crisped" (wrinkled) gills and predominantly two-spored basidia (opposed to four-spored in var. albipes). The two varieties are indistinguishable by nuclear ribosomal DNA sequence. I find C. albipes var. crispa in discrete patches, though C. albipes var. albipes may be nearby. The Michigan State University campus, where these specimens were collected, is the type location (for Conocybe crispa Longyear, the older and somewhat problematic name)
