This lovely lichen is possibly the most readily visible and noticed in the desert southwest, forming bright orange to red-orange crustose rosettes on rocks of all times, in full sun. The photo does not show the outer lobes, which are important for the positive identifications: they are elongate, convex, and noticeably roughened (use handlens). All parts turn a deep, satisfying wine-red immediately upon application of a drop of KOH.
