These mushrooms smell wonderful! They were growing from a very old and gnarly standing dead tree that had been mostly consumed by wood boring ants. I'm not very good at identifying dead trees, but it looked like it could be apple, which is odd, considering there were no living apple trees around. Dominant trees in the area were Birch, Black Cherry, Tulip poplar, and Hemlock. There were also a few oak and maples nearby. The mushrooms were found in a very remote part of the Cranberry Wilderness, about five miles from the nearest trail head and several hundred yards from the nearest established trail.
