The spines eventually turn a more dark brown with lighter tips. The spores were in the 3-5 micron range and seemed very "lobed or warted" to where I would have called then angular. No real orange on the stem but apparently this species has many faces and it was rooting. Since it was growing under spruce, Hydnellum regium may be an option but couldn't find enough definitive information on it. The latter species apparently has a short stem and the flesh is lighter colored. The cap flesh of these was quite dark.
