Found near an ornamental Sycamore tree, which I suspect is the mycorrhizal host. Only noticed the specimen because it was completely above the ground, and has a deep crack bisecting the gleba. The close-up shows the purple gleba with white veinations, but the key here is the thick nearly 1/4-inch thick, which stains quickly/instantly light yellowish-ochre with green highlights, but can tone to dark red in a few minutes. Hopefully the white veins of the gleba will show up too. Specimen had the consistency of a superball: very tough, but eventually splitting along the crack shown in the first photo.
