This mushroom was a fairly common sight in the Pine Barrens (Wharton and Lebanon State Forests) in August and early September, growing in association with conifers. An eager blue stainer all over, including the pilepellis. The original stipe color is a mixture of dull red, brown and yellow, with no reticulation. Some mature specimen reached a truly gargantuan size (7" cap!). Had a tough time figuring out what it was till one specimen (no picture available) turned completely brown in my basket after a couple of hours of "socializing" with other shrooms. BRB says it is a southern species that is distributed as far north as NJ.
