This nearly round 2 inch in diameter and 1/2 inch thick mushroom seemed nearly flush with the surface of the sawed end of the large deciduous log on which it was found. But after it was detached there was a very short central stalk. There was a tear in the very thin tan layer over the top of the specimen. The bottom was shiny black, covered with small warts, and wept after it was detached. On cross section the thin upper membrane was evident, and a similarly thin black layer underlay the tan one, and continued around and formed the bottom surface. The milk chocolate colored flesh had black spots and streaks. No gills or pores were evident, even with a 10x lens. There was no distinctive odor.
