When i first saw this mushroom, i figured it to be L. gerardii based on the wide gills-we had collected many of them early that day. But when i saw the streaked dry cap, i decided to look a little closer, and smell a little closer. It was a noxious odor that one fellow collector desribed well as "an oily rag from a machine shop". Though a little more pungent in the bleach department, i agree having a jet fuel smell. Since index fungorum has this species named in 1801, i suppose it is after its pungent odor of HNO 3. The gills are slightly greyish in age here, and when bruised turn a pinkish hue. The stem was also tinged pink, maybe from handling.
