Identification: This is an erect or ascending, non-sorediate Stereocaulon with abundant granular phyllocladia largely obscuring the central pseudopodetial branches. It was found growing on the ground among mosses in an open lodgepole pine forest. It is sterile, but otherwise resembles Stereocaulon tomentosum, which was quite common in this area. See MO Observation 20541. Neither the present observation nor that one shows the broad, crenulate, sometimes almost fan-like phyllocladia of Jason's Stereocaulon tomentosum, MO Observation 21738, photographed at a lower elevation in neighboring British Columbia (600-775m, vs. 1680m for the present observations). Hopefully, at some point we will have some pictures of the similar Stereocaulon alpinum to compare with these ones.
