Identification and habitat: This is not really an aquatic lichen, but it seems to be testing the concept! It is growing on a boulder nearly half a meter out into the main flow of the Maligne River. Though being overwashed nearly continuously, I think it is still recognizable as Phaeophyscia decolor. At this point in July the river is near its maximum flood from snowmelt on the nearby mountains and is nearly drowning the lichen, but soon the water will recede and the lichen will revert to being merely "near" the river.
