This lone specimen was growing near Oaks and possibly Madrone. The slightly sticky cap was 6.6 cm across and the color was mixed reddish browns and purplish, especially near the edges. The flesh was creamy colored with violet tints on the edges of the cap. The spores were ~ 11.0-12.0 X 6.3-7.8 microns, and somewhat rough. KOH on the cap was light orangish. KOH on the cap and stem flesh was yellow. It had a slight odor that was not unpleasant. This was a fairly meaty Cort that seems to be close to the descriptions for C. balteatus. The spores are a little larger than what is reported in MD but almost in range for what is noted in the Phillips' description.
