This isolate of Aspergillus alliaceus was found in a soil sample from a pistachio orchard including all the species of pistachio trees transplanted from their indigenous Asian country habitats to the USDA Wolfskill Germplasm Repository near Winters, Ca. The identification of the isolate was confirmed by USDA mycologist, Maren Klich, author of “Identification of Common Aspergillus Species”. This find was included in the report "Comparisons of Ochratoxigenic Aspergillus lanosus and A. alliaceus Isolates From California Tree Nut Orchards" on p.103 of “Proceedings of the 3rd Fungal Genomics,4th Fumonisin, and 16th Aflatoxin Elimination Workshops” and in the paper "Ochratoxin Production by the Aspergillus ochraceus Group and Aspergillus alliaceus" in Applied and Environmental Microbiology, May 2002, p. 2326-2329, Vol. 68, No. 5. This paper was the first report of ochratoxin contamination on moldy figs or of any food product produced by Aspergillus alliaceus.
